How to Choose the Right Freight Class for Your Shipment

What Is Freight Class?

NMFC freight class is a standardized classification system (50 through 500) that LTL carriers use to price shipments. Lower class numbers mean denser, easier-to-handle freight — and lower rates.

The Four Factors That Determine Class

  • **Density** — Weight per cubic foot. Denser = lower class.
  • **Stowability** — How easily it fits with other freight. Odd-shaped = higher class.
  • **Handling** — How difficult to load/unload. Fragile = higher class.
  • **Liability** — Risk of damage or theft. High-value = higher class.

  • Common Class Mistakes

The most expensive mistake: using a generic class when a commodity-specific class is lower. For example, many shippers classify plastic parts as Class 85 by default — but NMFC may classify their specific product as Class 65.

    How to Find Your Class

  • Use your product's NMFC code (search the NMFC directory or ask your broker).
  • Calculate density: weight ÷ cubic feet. Use the NMFC density chart to get an initial estimate.
  • Ask your Proload account manager — we classify thousands of commodities and can often find a lower legitimate class.

  • Reclassification Risk

If you use a class that's lower than your freight's actual class, the carrier can reclassify on delivery and bill the difference — often with a penalty. Always use the correct class from the start.
